Background: The project “Green Innovation Centres for the Agriculture and Food Sector” (hereafter called as the project, Green Innovation Centre, or GIC project) is part of the special initiative “Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems” (SI AGER) formerly called “ONE WORLD – No Hunger” (SEWOH) of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project addresses poverty and hunger and aims at contributing to sustainable rural development in selected areas through innovations in the agriculture and food sector. It establishes Green Innovation Centres for the agriculture and food sector in 15 countries, amongst them India. The project has two target groups: smallholder farmers and small- and medium sized enterprises that are working along selected value chains (VC).
For the project in India,local innovation systems, competence development and the establishment of farmer organisations are crucial means to achieve the main goals. In addition, the project is committed to the cross-cutting issues of, agroecology, climate change adaptation, renewable energy, gender equality, and youth employment. The project works in line with priorities of the Government of India, such as ‘Doubling Farmers’ Income and promoting Farmer Producer Organisations.
In Himachal Pradesh, the GIC project works to promote the apple value chain in selected districts, namely Shimla and Kullu.
Objectives: The overall objective of this activity is to conduct data collection for the apple value chain in Kullu and Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh. It includes quantitative household and enterprise interviews as well as focus group discussion. Details below:
• At least 120 quantitative interviews at household level (questionnaire-based) • Up to 15 interviews with downstream companies (questionnaire-based) • Six focus group discussion (3 per district)
Household and MSME questionnaire are already designed by the STU. However, due to the floods in the region in 2023, the project envisages to include a country-specific section with climate change related questions.
