Background:
India has committed to significantly boosting its renewable energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030 at COP26. With electricity demand projected to grow by nearly 5% annually until 2040 and an urgent need for climate change mitigation, scaling up innovative solar photovoltaic (PV) applications across the country is crucial. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has identified building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and rail/road-integrated photovoltaics (RIPV) as one of key new and innovative solar applications for proliferation under the Indo-German Solar Energy Partnership-Innovative Solar (IGSP IN-Solar) project.
To support this objective further, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is funding a project through its Development Partnership with the Private Sector (dPPP) program. The project, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), partners with Ornate Agencies Private Limited (Ornate Solar) to facilitate the widespread adoption of BIPV and RIPV in India.
The objectives of this activity are as follows:
• BIPV Ladder: A rating system to assess the financial and environmental viability of BIPV projects based on different categories of buildings.
• BIPV Design Tool: A digital tool linked to the Ladder, generating customized outputs such as design prototypes, energy generation forecasts, cost breakdowns, and payback period calculations.
• BIPV Website: A centralized, interactive platform featuring news, product catalogues, case studies, event calendars, and stakeholder resources to foster collaboration and drive BIPV adoption in India.
